Moscow, Feb 23: President Vladimir Putin today asked the Russian armed forces to be ready to repel any threat from terrorism. ''We must be ready to repel any threat from terrorism ranging from local conflicts to large-scale aggression,'' Putin said while congratulating the servicemen at a gala Kremlin ceremony on the occasion of the ''Day of Defenders of Motherland'' today.
''Our Army and fleet must conform to modern requirements, must be mobile, really professional and equipped with weapons and machines of new generation,'' the Russian leader said.
''We are strengthening and modernising the armed forces, including the strategic forces, for reliable national defence, which is the crucial condition for peaceful life of our people,'' he said.
Emphasising the need for the modernisaion of the Russian armed forces, he said Russia does not and cannot have ''aggressive goals or imperial designs''.
''We will not threaten anyone, but the Army and the fleet are an important factor of the national security,'' he said.
He added that the Russian defence potential ''has been and still is part of international security.''
''Historically, we together with other countries, have especial responsibility for global stability and security on the vast Eurasian continent,'' Putin said.
However, he admitted that ''Russian Army and fleet still had numerous problems and difficulties, which can and must be solved''.
Lauding the role of Russian armed forces, on the holiday, which was celebrated as ''Army Day'' during the Soviet Union era, Putin said ''virtually every family in Russia is in some way or another connected with the Army''.
''In the new conditions, the armed forces are again demonstrating their necessity and efficiency. We are proud of talented commanders and brave soldiers of Russia,'' he said. Bureau Report
