New Delhi, Feb 26: The Election Commission has disqualified about 3,300 people from contesting the coming Lok Sabha elections for not filing expenditure statements. The disqualifications for a period of three years have been made since April 2001 as they did not file the statutory accounts statement with the commission within 45 days of the completion of the election process, deputy election commissioner A N Jha told reporters today.
Most of the candidates had contested assembly elections held in various states. The commission was still compiling party-and-state-wise figures. The list of such debarred candidates would be circulated to the returning officers for the coming elections to enforce the ban.
The maximum number of such defaulters were from Uttar Pradesh which accounted for nearly one-third.
The debarred candidates cannot contest any election for three years from the date of disqualification. Mr Jha said various states would have simultaneous by-elections to vacant assembly seats along with the Lok Sabha poll and assembly elections in four states -- Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and Sikkim. These by-polls included one assembly seat each in Delhi, Kerala and Mizoram and two each in Bihar and Chhattisgarh.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, who is not yet a member of the assembly, is expected to contest from the state.
Mr Jha said the commission was finalising the requirements of para military forces in various states in consultation with the home ministry. Several states had revised their requirements after submitting their estimates.
The commission had taken note of the grenade blast in West Bengal's Midnapore district yesterday and ''this is being factored into'' the poll arrangements.
