Yangon, Nov 06: UN Human Rights envoy met today with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and a Cabinet Minister, a day after criticising prison conditions and praising the Myanmar junta's anti-aids efforts.
Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, on a weeklong mission to investigate human rights conditions, drove to the house of Suu Kyi where she is being kept under house arrest by Myanmar's military government. This is the first time the junta has allowed an outsider to see Suu Kyi since she met with the special UN envoy to Myanmar, Razali Ismail, on October 1st. Only Razali and officials from the International Committee for the Red Cross have been allowed to visit her since she was taken into custody on May 30 following a clash between her supporters and a pro-junta mob in Northern Myanmar.
Earlier today, he met with three senior members of Suu Kyi's National League for democracy party at a government guest house. He also met with Home Minister Tin Hlaing, who oversees police and justice affairs.
