Agartala, Feb 20: The Tripura government has appointed a single member State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) to determine power tariffs and give licences for new power projects, in a bid to rein in heavy revenue losses due to subsidy. State power minister Manik Dey told newspersons here today that the National Thermal Power Commission (NTPC) chief executive officer Sashanka Sekhar Chakraborty would be chairman of the commission, which was constituted under the directive of the Union government.
After the SERC fixes the power tariff, the subsidy currently being given by the state government, would be withdrawn.
Last May the state government had hiked power tariff by 35 per cent, but is still providing over 50 per cent subsidy, the highest in the country, leading to considerable revenue losses.
The tenure of the new chairman would be five years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. Bureau Report
