Hyderabad, Feb 27: After coining the popular 'India Shining' slogan, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), heading the NDA at the Centre, is harping on the 'Congress sinking' note as its leaders were deserting the party. Talking to reporters here, BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu termed the Congress as a 'sinking ship' which was being deserted by the faithfuls only to join the BJP.
''From the Gandhi dynasty itself, Varun and Maneka Gandhi have joined us. This was followed by Laxman Singh. Senior Congress leaders Najma Heptullah and Karunakaran are angry with their party,'' he said.
However, Naidu was quick to add that he was merely making an observation about Karunakaran being unhappy with the Congress high command. ''We have not talked to each other,'' he replied when asked about the possibility of Heptullah joining the BJP.
Stating that the ''double standards'' of the Congress had been exposed, the BJP president said after calling regional parties as harmful to the nation and favouring a single party rule, the Congress was approaching them to forge alliances.
''It (Congress) has realised that it has no strength and is helplessly looking for new allies so much so that regional parties are giving ultimatums to it,'' he said painting a stark picture of that party. On the Congress's alliance with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu said the Congress was trying to ''hoodwink'' the people by issuing confusing statements (referring to that party's lack of clarity on the separate Telangana issue). ''I am waiting for them to come out with a clear package (agenda) and I will react then,'' he added.
On the induction of D P Yadav into the party, the BJP president admitted that it was a mistake and corrective steps were taken.
