A Deputy Superintendent of Police and four constables were killed and four others seriously wounded when the banned Maoist Communist Centre blew up their vehicle with a landmine in Jharkhand on Thursday, official sources said. In the second major offensive against the police in Jharkhand within 10 days, the MCC set off the landmine and opened fire on the vehicle near Bargarh in Garhwa district, the DIG, (Palamu range), Parvez Hayat, said.
Police returned the fire but the ultras managed to escape.
Dy SP (Sadar), Amlesh Kumar, and three policemen – Sheo Kumar Das, Kanhaiya Singh, and Virendra Kumar -- were killed instantaneously and four others injured in the blast. A red alert has been sounded in all the three districts of Palamu division -- Palamu, Garhwa and Latehar. Central para-military forces from Palamu and Garhwa districts rushed to the spot, Hayat said.
The state's borders with neighbouring Chattisgarh had been sealed and raids were being made. Twelve CRPF jawans were killed and 15 others wounded in an ambush and a landmine blast by the MCC in jharkhand's Hazaribagh district on September 23.
