Faced with the payment crisis over Enron's power supply to MSEB, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has said that he had written to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, urging him to come to the "rescue" of the state by exploring various options to buy electricity from the US energy giant. "We are not in a position to buy the entire power from Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company (DPC) nor can we bear the current burden of payment for which it has invoked counter-guarantee of the state and centre", Deshmukh told reporters after a cabinet meeting in Mumbai. The CM also announced the setting up of a high-level experts' committee, to be headed by the former home secretary, Madhav Godbole, to review the power purchase agreement signed by MSEB with DPC. The Chief Minister's statement came after DPC invoked counter-guarantee given by the Centre for its outstanding November bills with MSEB to the tune of Rs 790 crore. Bureau Report
