MP HC asks Army Chief to pay compensation of Rs one lakh
Jabalpur, Sept 17: The Madhya Pradesh High Court here has directed the Chief of the Army Staff to award Rs one lakh as compensation for the ill-treatment and harassment meted out to a major while in illegal custody of the army.

A division bench comprising Justice Dipak Mishra and Justice A K Mishra allowed the `habeas corpus' petition filed by Varsha Bharadwaj, wife of army Major A K Bharadwaj alleging that her husband was illegally kept in the custody of the army.
During the custody he was ill-treated and unnecessarily harassed by the army officials, she said urging for compensation.
The court said that Rs 5,000 be also paid as cost of the `habeas corpus' petition filed by the Major's wife.
By filing the `habeas corpus' petition, Varsha Bharadwaj submitted that her husband was posted in the armed command at Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.
On January 22, 2000, one Colonal A K Singh misbehaved with both her husband and her. Irked over this she lodged a complaint with the concerned police and army officials.
Again on July 12, 2000, two army officials and others misbehaved with both of them and put her husband under illegal house arrest for 48 hours.
However, she came here to her in-laws house after fleeing from Jhansi. The army officials also forced her to withdraw the complaint to which she refused.
