Shillong, June 27: A senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Adolf Hitler Marak was arrested today for his alleged nexus with militants, Meghalaya Home Minister R G Lyngdoh said.
Marak was charged under the Unlawful Activities Act for allegedly allowing his official vehicle to be used for carrying militants.
Marak, who was removed to the civil hospital here after the arrest, claimed 'innocence' in the case and said he would fight in the court of law to prove his innocence.
However, SP of East Khasi Hills district I Nongrang refused to speak to the press when asked to elaborate on the charges under which he was arrested. Lyngdoh told reporters that the law would take its own course and said the issue should not be politicised. Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress legislative party secretary Edmond K Sangma told reporters that as per the party high command's directive, a bail application would be moved in the court. He said he had talked to NCP national general secretary P A Sangma on the issue. The NCLP secretary did not rule out a 'political motive' behind filing of the case. Since Marak, a former cabinet minister in the F A Khonglam ministry, was 'cooperating' with the police, the investigating officer could have asked for his appearance without arresting him, Sangma felt.
