Jammu, Aug 29: Sounding upbeat about the developments in Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said that peace was returning to the valley but emphasised full normalcy will return only after concerted efforts. Addressing a press conference in Jammu, Vajpayee said that there was a decrease in violence in the state, but it was not possible to stop each and every terrorist operating here. "The people of J&K are more relaxed and optimistic about their future now," said the Prime Minister.
On bilateral talks with Pakistan, he said it was upto Islamabad to make the first move now. However, Vajpayee added that a conducive atmosphere was required for any talks to be successful.
About Musharraf`s call for a ceasefire in J&K, the PM said that, "Pakistan should stop cross-border firing and ceasefire will automatically follow." India`s policy on Kashmir has been consistent, he added.
Commenting on the failure of talks to resume airlinks, he said that there were little impediments in restoring flights. However, he called for increase in bilateral trade between India and Pakistan saying it will be beneficial to both countries.
Vajpayee also showered praise on Mufti Mohammad Sayeed`s government in J&K saying it was doing purposeful work in the state. " People have hopes from this government," he said. On the collapse of Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, he said it was a political development. "Only time will tell whether it has any implications on forthcoming polls," said the Prime Minister.
"This is an era of coalition politics," he said. Bureau Report
