New Delhi, Mar 01: The country s largest carmaker Maruti Udyog Limited today said sales rose 62 per cent in February 2004 at 42,263 vehicles against 26,113 units sold in the corresponding month last year. These include exports, which touched 3,022 units, a seven per cent growth over 2,824 units in February 03.
Sales grew 73 per cent in the domestic market to 38,863 units against 22,475 units sold in February 03. The company’s volume in the domestic A2 segment, where it sells the hatchback Alto, Zen and Wagon R, grew 166 per cent to 19,179 units against 7,216 units sold in February 2003.
Sales of the company’s bread-and-butter model, Maruti 800, were also up as it sold 13,518 units against 11,101 units in February 03, a growth of 21.8 per cent.
In the A3 segment, where it sells the mid-size Baleno and Esteem, sales were up 102 per cent on sales of 1,387 units against 687 units sold in the corresponding month last year.
The company attributed the high sales growth in February '04 to the ''low base''. ''While sales remained strong during the month, the growth figure is unusually high also due to a low base. Car sales in February 2003 were artificially low.
''Customers in large numbers had postponed purchase in anticipation of an excise duty reduction in the Union budget which was presented at the end of February 2003, MUL said.
Total sales in the first eleven months of the fiscal, including exports, grew 32.9 per cent to 419,422 units against 315,631 units in April 02- February 03.
