Baghdad, June 14: Coalition troops have foiled an escape attempt by Iraqi detainees held at a prison complex west of Baghdad, shooting one dead and injuring seven, the US-led coalition forces said today. Two of the injured were in serious condition, it added.
It said the detainees rushed military police guards at the facility yesterday, brandishing metal bars and throwing rocks. The guards opened fire in self-defence, it added.
One military policeman was lightly injured in the incident at Abu Ghreib, a sprawling complex that once held thousands of political detainees opposed to the rule of Saddam Hussein.
The incident at Abu Ghreib came one day after two Iraqi prisoners were shot trying to escape from a US camp. One of the two later died of his wounds.
