New Delhi, Aug 19: Bar Council of India (BCI) today stayed Delhi Bar Council (DBC) elections after finding that 14,714 voters were excluded from the voter list.
Acting on a representation of Delhi High Court lawyer Ajay Kumar, BCI the apex regulatory body for lawyers invoked its statutory powers and observed that if the election process was not stayed it would amount to a negation of democratic process.
BCI ordered that further steps in the matter of holding elctions to DBC, scheduled for September 19, be stayed.
Directing DBC not to proceed with the polls, BCI also asked it to file their reply by August 21.
The matter has now been fixed to August 24.

Meanwhile, the lawyers agitating on the alleged illegal exclusion of 14,714 out of 33,000 advocates from the voter list ended their fast unto death after they were served juice by BCI vice chairman (executive committee) Babu Ram Tiwari.

Earlier, lawyers Mahesh Kumar Tiwari and Ajay Kumar, who were prospective candidates for the DBC election, made representations alleging that many illegalities were being committed by DBC in holding its election.

It was also alleged that the honorary secretary of DBC, who was not empowered to hold the polls, was illegally conducting it.

Several writ petitions were also filed by the aggrieved advocates in Supreme Court and Delhi High Court, Tiwari said.
