The Showtime/Sky Atlantic series already features icons of horror including Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), his creature (Rory Kinnear) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), reported Entertainment Weekly.

Series co-creator John Logan hinted at the introduction of a new character in an interview.

"I can tell you this - and this is such a tease, and I am sorry for it - but after two years I am finally adding another famous literary character," he said.

"It's been fun going into another writer's brain and bringing one of those great characters back into our world."

Sky Atlantic and Showtime announced last month that "Penny Dreadful" - a transatlantic co-production - would return for a third season in 2016.

The series features Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton among its ensemble cast.
