Ahmedabad, Aug 22: The third phase of recording statements of witnesses of last year's post-Godhra riots in the city, including the Naroda Patiya case, by the Nanavati Commission, would commence here today even as police beefed up security in view of large number of minority community witnesses deposing before the panel.
The Commission, comprising Justice (retd) G T Nanavati and Justice (retd) K G Shah, would record statements of riot victims of the worst affected Naroda Patiya and Gulberga society massacres in the coming days, official sources said today. The Commission is also slated to record today, statements of victims of Madhavpura and Shahpur areas that were pending at the end of the second phase on August 1.
Meanwhile, security arrangements have been strengthened keeping in view the large number of minority community people who would appear before the commission to depose regarding the riots and following `observations' by the Supreme Court seeking `adequate protection of witnesses', police said.
Hundreds of riot victims from the city's various areas have already either deposed before the Commission or have submitted written affidavits in past two phases, while one minority group preferred to depose `in-camera' fearing retaliation.

The Commission members also have close to 4,000 affidavits that are yet to be scrutinised.
