New Delhi, Aug 05: Top BJP leaders' criticism over NHRC's plea to Supreme Court for a fresh trial of the accused in Best bakery case outside Gujarat today created a furore in Lok Sabha with opposition members accusing them of casting an aspersion on its functioning and seeking an apology from them.
Raising the issue during zero hour, Samajwadi party member Ramjilal Suman alleged that all the 21 accused in the case were acquitted by a court due to "negligence" of the Modi government.
Suman said BJP chief M Venkaiah Naidu, party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra and Chief Minister Narendra Modi had not only criticised the constitutional body but said its petition to Supreme Court for a fresh trial of the accused outside Gujarat posed "a serious threat to country's federal structure."
"These people should apologise for criticising the commission," he demanded.
Supporting him, CPI-M members Rupchand Pal and Basudeb Acharia said this should be condemned by the House.
Malhotra, who was sitting in the House, rejected the allegation that he had described the commission as "anti-Hindu" saying what he had said was that this was the perception among the people.
He, however, admitted that he had stated that that the NHRC's plea was against the federal structure of the country and it would send a wrong signal. "The commission's decision is as good as a no confidence against Gujarat High Court," he said.
