New Delhi, May 27: Share of North America in India's computer software and related services exports has declined by 4.92 per cent to 61 per cent in 2002-03 even as it remains a major destination for India's it exports, according to provisional statistics by ESC. In terms of percentage contribution, share of North American market has declined by 4.92 per cent in India total's export of computer software and services in 2002-03 to 61.03 per cent from 64.19 per cent in 2001-02, electronics and software export promotion council (ESC) said.

However, North America still continues to be the major destination for India's IT exports, accounting an export turnover of $5.84 billion in 2002-03 as against $4.91 billion in the previous year, ESC said adding that this was an increase of 18.88 per cent in dollar terms.

Exports to Europe was up by 33.82 per cent in 2002-03 to touch $2.35 billion from $1.79 billion and to Japan, Korea and other far east countries, Indian exports have gone up by 13.45 per cent in 2002-03 touching $354 million, ESC said.
The market-share of Indian IT products to EU market has gone up by 5.03 per cent, it said.

Middle East market also picked by a whopping rise of over 200 per cent in exports in 2002-03 and African countries registered 232 per cent growth in exports, while that of Australia and other oceanic countries it was 43 per cent.

"This is a good augury that there is a clear indication of emergence of alternative markets in Europe, Japan, Middle East and African countries which is imperative to hedge the risk of putting everything in the US market,” D K Sareen, ED, ESC, said.
