The film stars Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles. It is loosely based on the real-life incident of a gay professor, who was terminated from his job because of his sexuality.

"When you are in the middle of a tough shooting schedule, you do wait anxiously for the film to be complete but when you say 'Cut' for the last time, you feel so empty inside. 'Aligarh' has been a very special experience for all of us and we will cherish the process forever," Mehta said in a statement.

The shooting started in end-January, 2015 in Bareilly and after a two-month schedule, it culminated in Mumbai last week.

This is Rao's third film with Mehta after "Shahid" and "CityLights". The film is scheduled to release later this year.
