A local Ahmedabad court issued a notice to Shah Rukh Khan`s production house on Thursday in relation to his upcoming film `Raees` based on a bootlegger`s life.
Mumbai: Fans of Shah Rukh Khan are eagerly waiting for ‘Raees’, a film which is one of his most ambitious projects. But the film in question has landed in trouble. Gangster Abdul Latif’s son Mustaq Ahmad has dragged the makers of the film to court by filing a suit against them for ‘defaming’ his later father.
A local Ahmedabad court issued a notice to the Bollywood superstar’s production house on Thursday.
City civil court judge R T Vatsani issued notices to Red Chillies Entertainment Private Limited, Khan's production house, and co-producers Excel Entertainment and Rahul Dholakia Productions. Replies are to be filed by May 11.
The film which will mark the Bollywood debut of Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, is reportedly based on Latif’s life and hence his son Mustaq has sought injunction against the release as well as its promotional material.
The second part of the film reportedly shows Latif in a very bad light. So Mustaq believes that the film will ruin his family's reputation and has hence demanded Rs 101 crore in damages.
The petitioner has also claimed that when the script was being researched, his family members were consulted and the producers had also advertised that the film was based on Latif's life.
‘Raees’ revolves around the life of a bootlegger who operated in Gujarat in the 1980s. The film also stars method actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Latif, wanted in dozens of cases of murder, kidnapping and bootlegging, was said to be a part of Dawood Ibrahim gang. He was arrested in 1995 and killed by police in 1997 while trying to escape from Sabarmati jail here.
