Munich, Apr 29: Fourth-seeded Martin Verkerk used his big serve to overcome Boris Pashanski 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) and reach the quarterfinals of the of the $375,750 BMW Open yesterday.
Verkerk, who reached the final of last year's French Open, fired 21 aces to get by the qualifier from Serbia-Montenegro. Pashanski was playing in his first main draw of an ATP tournament.
Verkerk's serve frustrated Pashanski, who used a delicate touch to trouble the Dutchman. Pashanski served for the set at 5-3 in the second but dropped his serve and went on to lose the decisive tiebreaker.
