Baharampore (WB), Oct 09: Several persons were injured and several houses destroyed after a tornado lashed three villages in Murshidabad district today. Harahari, Chhamugram and Manigram villages under Sagardighi police station were hit by the tornado at about 10 am, which lasted for five minutes, district magistrate Manoj Panth said.
The details of the damages would be available after the district officials, who have rushed to the effected area, come back, he said.
Meanwhile, at least 2000 people were shifted to safer places at Sabang area as the Kapaleswari and Keleghai rivers were flowing above danger level in west Midnapore district following incessant rains in South Bengal for the last three days, official sources said today. Altogether 12 relief camps had been set up at Sabang and relief materials are being provided to the affected people.
One person was killed in house collapse at Krishnapur village under Kharagpur PS in the district yesterday.
In South 24 Parganas district, all 13 blocks in riverine areas were alerted for possible inundation due to high tide in full moon, official sources said. The alert would be in effect till October 11.
Low-lying areas have already been inundated and the situation could be worsened if the river embankments of Sagar Island, Pathar Pratima and Kakdwip breached during the tide.
