Jaisalmer, Aug 02: A large cache of arms, ammunition and explosives, hidden in sand dunes near Gamanewala village in Jaisalmer district on the Indo-Pak border, was seized today, police said. The big haul included 11 kg of RDX, 17 ak-47 rifles, eight 38 bore revolvers. Eight 9-m pistols, 15 hand grenades, district Superintendent of Police P Ramji said.
The police also recovered 68 magazines of AK reseires assault rifles, more than 700 cartridges of pistols, revolvers and rifles, Ramji said.
The arms and ammunition was found buried in a government land along Indira Gandhi canal, two kilometers south of border village of Gamanewala, he said.
Smuggled from across the border, the arms were believed to have been dumped here since 1999 and the CID (special branch) was trying to locate the hidden goods since April last year after getting a wind of it.
The high velocity winds this summer blew away sand dunes o ver the dumped goods and later heavy rains washed away further sands helping police to locate it.
Police is investigating the case.
