New Delhi, Mar 23: During the first 10 months of this fiscal telecom companies provided 68,88,294 new telephone (fixed-line and cellular) connections, as compared to 52,22,137 in the corresponding period of previous year, a growth of 32 per cent. While the new fixed telephone lines provided declined by 23 per cent during April 2002-Janaury 2003, the cellphone connections registered a growth of over 131.3 per cent, according to official figures.
Telephone switching capacity added during January 2003 fell by over 49 per cent at 3,08,550 from the capacity recorded during January 2002.
The fixed telephone connections provided during the 10 months were 21,56,673 as compared to 31,76,521 connections provided during the same period a year ago.
Cellphone connections provided during January 2003 sharply rose by 175.7 per cent at 6.82 lakh, official data said. For the first ten months of this fiscal the cellular connections stood at 47,31,621, more than 20,45,616 provided during the same period a year ago.
During January 2003, around 2,36,583 new (net) phone connections were provided in the country by the public and private sectors, which was 64.4 per cent less than connections provided during the corresponding month a year ago.
During January 2003, 1,386 village public telephones (VPT) were provided which was 90 per cent lower than 13,793 VPTs provided during same month of previous year.
During the first ten months of this fiscal, VPTs provided by public and private sector was 32.7 per cent higher at 43,257 than 32,592 VPT provided during April 2001-January 2002. Bureau Report
