London, Nov 14: New Delhi has been chosen to stage the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the event's governing body announced in Jamaica.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) voted 46-22 in favour of holding the event in India's sprawling capital city in preference to a bid from Hamilton in Canada.
''Delhi and Hamilton each demonstrated a strong desire to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but there could only be one winner,'' CGF president Mike Fennel said following the vote by the Federation's general assembly in Montego Bay yesterday.
India will become the second Asian country to stage the Games after Malaysia in 1998.
Indian Olympic Association officials said their country, as one of the former British Empire's most significant colonies and as Asia's third largest economy, was an ideal venue for the event.
