Taipei, June 10: Taiwan reported six more SARS cases today, but there were no new fatalities announced. The latest cases raised the number of SARS patients to 686.
The death toll from severe acute respiratory syndrome remained unchanged at 81 for the 13th straight day.
Taiwan health officials have insisted that their SARS crisis is coming under control and had requested Monday that the World Health Organization lift a travel warning for the island.
One of the requirements for lifting the warning is that Taiwan have five or fewer new cases per day for three days, said Chen Chien-Jen, head of the Department of Health.
Taiwan officials said they were confident of meeting the criteria despite the six additional cases announced Tuesday. They said the six cases did not represent people who became ill on the same day, but that they became ill over a period of four days and were not announced until confirmed as cases.
