The Taliban lost control of its last Afghan province on Sunday when authority over Zabul was transferred to a council of tribal elders, the Afghan Islamic Press reported. The Pakistan-based agency said that Zabul province had been under the control of two Taliban officials, Mullah Abdul Salam Rocketi and Mullah Syed Mohammed Haqqani. The province was on Sunday handed over to a council led by a tribal elder Hamidullah Tokhi, the agency said.
The province borders Kandahar, the Taliban home base which was surrendered to tribal leaders on Friday.
Mullah Rocketi, one of the most notorious warlords of the south, was given his name to reflect his fondness for high-tech weapons.
