Police on Wednesday swung batons at unruly Congress activists and arrested 22 demonstrators trying to storm the zonal office of the Unit Trust of India during an agitation against the UTI scam.

Though the police denied having beaten up the demonstrators, PCC vice-president Pradip Bhattacharya alleged that 12 congress workers, including three women, were injured in the 'unprovoked police action'.

Bhattacharya demanded punishment of the 'guilty policemen' and a high-level inquiry into their action on peaceful demonstrators. Meanwhile, five Trinamool Congress activists were also arrested after they demonstrated before the city police headquarters in protest against 'police highhandedness' against party legislators during the Dharna inside writers' buildings on Tuesday.
