Lucknow, Jan 19: Uttar Pradesh witnessed a sunny day giving some respite to people from severe cold as 35 more succumbed over night taking the toll in the state to 402. While seven people died in Allahabad, Ghazipur accounted for five deaths, four in Ballia, three each in Gorakpur, Sonebhadra and Srawasti, two each in Bahraich, Gonda, Balrampur, Sant Kabirnagar and Kausambhi. Alarmed at the steep increase in deaths, the state government has issued fresh directives to the district magistrates and divisional commissioners to ensure bonfires at public places and distribute blankets among the poor and destitute.
Night temperature hovered between two and six degrees celsius with Allahabad recording minimum of two degrees. Varanasi and Lucknow shivered at four degrees celsius. Bareilly recorded six degrees.
