New Delhi, Feb 12: Lambasting congress for not having the ''honesty to accept that the national democratic alliance had given the country an 8 per cent economic growth'', the Bharatiya Janata party today said its ''disinformation campaign'' was underway because it did not have a defined economic policy like the coalition. ''The NDA regime not only managed to undo the continuous slide in the economy under the congress and previous governments but also reversed what many economists described as the 'Hindu growth rate', signifying the slow progress on economic front, by bringing back economy on the fast track,'' union minister and party spokesman Arun Jaitely told reporters here. Coming down heavily on the congress, he said instead of acknowledging the growth recorded during the NDA regime, it had been 'talking down' the recent achievement. ''We know it well that it was the congress, which for several decades put the country on economic slowtrack while most of the world was progressing,'' he said.

He alleged that the congress had only slogans but no roadmap for India's economic growth. ''if anybody asks for the economic policy of the main opposition party, there would be a confusion and no answer.''

''The Congress should be blamed squarely for economic slowdown in the country after the independence and the situation was turned around only by the NDA government under the able leadership of Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee,'' he said. Bureau Report
