New Delhi, Nov 05: After saying no to crackers during
Diwali, the students of the capital are all set to bid adieu
to fast food in a campaign against juvenile diabetes.
"To keep myself away from overweight and to prevent
obesity, I will avoid fast food, do regular exercise and will
keep myself fit, healthy and strong," thousands of public
school students would pledge during the `diabetes week`,
beginning November 14 - the `World Diabetes Day`.
Chairman of Delhi Diabetes Research Centre (DDRC), the organisers of the campaign, A K Jhingan said, "Lifestyle, especially modern eating habits and lack of exercise due to pressure of studies, are affecting health of children at a higher pace. Bringing a change in the scenario is the need of the hour." Jhingan appealed to teachers to educate children vis-a-vis obesity while encouraging them to exercise regularly. He said the fast food culture should be discouraged and blood, urine glucose of obese and overweight children checked regularly to detect diabetes at an early stage.
He also urged parents to set an example and make healthy food choices at home, besides practising physical activities.
DDRC would also organise a `diabetes run` on November 14 at Parliament Street here to create awareness on the issue. Many city public schools are expected to participate in the event, he added. Bureau Report
