Hyderabad, Nov 15: Caught in a piquant situation after Election Commission's observation that polls in Andhra Pradesh are not possible before March, the ruling TDP is mulling over possible moves to convince the commission on the need to hold elections at the earliest.
A day after dissolution of the assembly, ten months ahead of its term, TDP supremo and caretaker Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu convened a meeting of his party's politburo this evening to discuss the issue from all angles.
"We do not intend to adopt a confrontationist approach on the matter. We will try to impress upon the election commission to expedite the process keeping in view the examination season in march," TDP sources said here.
The TDP, seeking a fresh mandate on the twin planks of naxalite violence and "obstructionist politics" of opposition congress, is looking at a time-frame of mid-February for the elections, hoping to harness perceived sympathy in the aftermath of naxalite attack on Naidu.
Citing Supreme Court judgement in Gujarat case, the sources said the EC is required to initiate immediate steps for holding elections for constituting the assembly on the "first occasion".
"We are banking on the spirit of the apex court's judgement so far as holding elections after premature dissolution of the assembly is concerned," the sources said.
