New Delhi, July 28: The Supreme Court today gave three weeks time to the Haryana government to tell the court as to the manner in which the earlier orders for construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal by Punjab or the Union Government could be implemented. Appearing for the state government, senior advocate Vinod Bobde, stated before a bench comprising Justice Ruma Pal and Justice P V Reddi that the apex court had in January last year directed the Punjab government to construct their portion of the SYL canal within one year.
He stated that the court had made an express order that if the Punjab government failed to construct the SYL canal, the Union Government would take appropriate steps to complete construction of the Punjab portion of the SYL canal.

The apex court had ordered for completion of the SYL canal project hanging fire for long on the ground that Rs 700 crore already invested in the project could not be allowed to go down the drain, Bobde stated.

However, the bench said that Haryana government was only stating the order of the supreme court and not indicating the manner in which the same could be implemented.
The state government then took three weeks time to suitably amend their application giving details about the manner in which the January 2002 order of the apex court could be implemented.
