Mumbai, June 01: Sticking to its formula of maintaining equi-distance from Shiv Sena-BJP saffron combine and ruling Congress-NCP alliance, the Left Front in Maharashtra today resolved to forge a third alternative comprising secular, progressive and democratic forces. The political resolution, unanimously passed by the Left Front on the concluding day of its two-day conclave at Alibag in Raigad district, stated that a credible political alternative of Leftist and secular ideologies must be evolved to oppose Sena-BJP and Congress-NCP. With the crucial assembly elections in the state slated for next year, the Left Front's political resolution assumes significance since the front till recently was part of the ruling DF coalition in Maharashtra. However, following the failure of the Congress-NCP to stick to the 51-point common minimum programme (CMP), drafted prior to the formation of the coalition, the three parties withdrew from the government. The Left Front's resolution stated that all those secular and democratic forces, opposing these four major political parties, must be included in the proposed alternative, the resolution said. Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), CPI and CPI-M are the only three parties participating in the Left Front's conclave and notably Janata Dal-secular and Samajwadi Party are not attending the conclave.
