A hardcore Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) activist has been killed in an encounter with security forces at Nangalbibira in south Garo Hills district, police said in Sikkim on Saturday. The Ultras opened fire on the security forces during a raid in the area on Thursday forcing the security personnel to retaliate, police said quoting delayed reports reaching in Sikkim.
While one ANVC militant, identified as Provin K Marak, was killed a self-styled commander-in-chief of the outfit Jerome C Momin managed to escape. He was suspected to have crossed over to Bangladesh. Police recovered a Chinese-made M-20 pistol from the slain Ultra. “Meanwhile, in a stepped up anti-extortion drive, two militants were arrested by police at Laitumukhrah and Borsora areas,” police said.
