Guwahati, July 11: The overall flood situation in Assam worsened over the past 24 hrs as two people lost their lives and more than 3.5 lakh people were affected by a fresh wave of flood caused by more rain on the Himalayan foothills. Already nine districts were reeling under water and this second wave of flood has claimed two lives, when two children were swept away in Majuli, the world's biggest river island.
More than 3.50 lakh people of nine districts of the state have so far been affected in the second wave of flood this year, official source said.
The source said that as many as 269 villages of the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Goalpara, Nalbari and Kamrup have been affected by the floods so far this year. The total area affected is 17,228 hectares, of which 15,497 hectares are crop land. The worst hit Dhemaji district remained cut off from the rest of the state for the eighth day today. The road link to Dhemaji was snapped on July 2 when a portion of the National Highway 52 at Samarajan was washed away by the flood waters of Jiadhal river, while the rail link was snapped much earlier.
