New Delhi, Mar 11: Police here have busted yet another racket involved in betting over the current World Cup cricket with the arrest of four alleged 'satta' operators in a north east Delhi area yesterday during the India-Sri Lanka match. Sanjiv Sabharwal alias Toni alias Peter Paul (37), Rajesh Kumar Shabarwal (33), Wilson Manial (36) and Kawaljeet (36) were nabbed from a house in Naveen Shahdara last evening in the sixth such case since the World Cup began on February 28. The arrest, following a specific information, came when the four were allegedly involved in organising betting over yesterday's crucial match, police said, adding several lakhs of rupees were involved. During interrogation, it emerged that Toni used to provide connecting lines to at least three different bookies simultaneously, who would receive bets from persons across north India, police said. For his efforts, Toni would be given a fixed amount per line usage, whereas the bookie made a killing or took a beating depending upon how the match progressed or how the bets were placed, police said.
Police recovered five mobile telephone handsets, 10 landline telephone sets, two EPABX exchange sets, a recording instrument, four TV sets, one audio and two calculators.
A register having entries of bets worth lakhs of rupees was also recovered from the accused, police said.
Investigations are in progress to identify and track down their contacts, police said, adding more apprehensions were likely soon. Bureau Report
