New Delhi, July 30: The situation along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir remained unchanged with infiltration and exfiltration attempts going on, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Intelligence reports have indicated that an estimated 3,000 terrorists were undergoing training in camps in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, Defence Minister George Fernandes said.
Adequate military measures had been put in place to thwart the Pakistani designs and intercept terrorists groups attempting to infiltrate, he told the House in a written reply. Outlining the new counter insurgency measures undertaken, he said they included setting up of more electronic surveillance devices along the LoC, multi-tiered deployment, construction of fencing along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir and at selected places along the LoC.
The minister, however, disputed reports that after the 'Operation Sarp Vinash' in Surankote area of Rajouri district in Jammu, the militants have managed to disperse to other areas especially Doda-Kishtawar. "There are no intelligence inputs to confirm this aspect," he said.
Fernandes said intelligence agencies had provided timely and adequate information regarding frequent use of remote areas like Hilkaka region as transit point by militants.
He said based on these reports a number of counter insurgency operations were carried out in these areas, with the 'Operation Sarp Vinash' being the biggest. Bureau Report
