New Delhi, Nov 30: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee advised the Congress governments in states to ''go on a five-year exile'' so that others could take up the job of development left unfinished by the party. Referring to poor condition of roads in Madhya Pradesh, the Prime Minister said Congress leader Arjun Singh had apologised to people there for the bad shape of infrastructure in the state, which had created a controversy in the congress as to whether apologising or expressing regret was the right thing for him to do.
''But I feel that no apology or expression of regret will compensate for the neglect of development in the state, and the only right thing for the party to do is to go on a five-year exile,'' the Prime Minister said, addressing a BJP election rally in Pitampura in North Delhi here this evening.
They should make place for others to take up the unfinished task of development, he said.
The Prime Minister said Congressmen were trying to hide their failures on the development front by accusing the BJP-led government at the Centre of coming in the way of implementation of their schemes.
