Jakarta, Oct 30: The United Nations is to move from its longtime headquarters alongside a busy street in the Indonesian capital Jakarta because of security fears, UN sources said today. "It's true. It's happening, and the main thing is that the building is not protectable," one UN source told reporters.
"It's pretty general knowledge that the building is not terribly safe," another UN staffer said. "Now the plan is to move as quickly and conveniently as possible to a new location."
Both UN workers said the move, expected soon, was prompted by the august 19 bombing of the UN's Baghdad headquarters, which killed 22 UN employees including top envoy Sergio Vieira De Mello.
The UN's resident coordinator in Jakarta, Bo Asplund, declined to comment on "administrative issues".
A review of UN facilities found that "one of the most urgent priorities" was to move the Jakarta team out of its building, the source said.
