The Hurriyat Conference on Wednesday called for a general strike in Kashmir on Friday to protest what it called growing incidents of human rights violations by security forces in the valley. The amalgam's general council, at its meeting in Chennai, decided to give the call for strike in view of growing incidents of custodial killings and excesses by security forces on the people of Kashmir, a Hurriyat spokesman said. Without disclosing the agenda of the meeting, the spokesman said that it was a routine meeting. Hurriyat sources, however, said the conglomerate discussed Hurriyat's stand on assembly elections, current political situation and proposed Indo-Pak dialogue. Prior to commencement of the meeting attended by 20 Hurriyat constituents, former Hurriyat Conference chairman and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest by police.
