VP Shekhawat begins five-day visit to Myanmar for bilateral ties
New Delhi, Nov 02: Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat`s five-day visit to Myanmar beginning Sunday is aimed at consolidating its ties with India and he is expected to discuss issues of bilateral and regional interest with top Myanmarese leaders.
New Delhi, Nov 02: Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat's five-day visit to Myanmar beginning Sunday is aimed at consolidating its ties with India and he is expected to discuss issues of bilateral and regional interest with top Myanmarese leaders.
"The visits reflects the significant consolidation and expansion of India-Myanmar relations in recent years and will provide an opportunity for deepening our dialogue with the Myanmarese leadership at the highest level," a release issued by the External Affairs Ministry said.
The last VVIP visit to Myanmar was that of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1987.
The Vice President will call on Senior General Than Shwe, chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and have meetings with his counterpart and other Myanmarese leders.
His programme will include visits to Bagar and Mandalay where a consulate was opening last year.
An agreement on visa exemption for official and diplomatic passport holders of the two countries is likely to be signed during the visit. Separate agreements for cultural and educational excfhanges between the two countries are also expected to be signed during the visit, it said.
