Six top Hurriyat leaders including its chairman Prof Abdul Ghani Bhat and Syed Ali Shah Geelani were, on Friday, put under house arrest and three others detained to prevent demonstrations called by them against the alleged reign of terror unleashed by security forces in the state. Contingents of local police assisted by paramilitary forces in a pre-dawn action laid siege to the office-cum-residence of Muslim Conference chief Bhat at Wazirbagh and Geelani, chief of the political bureau of Jamaat-e-Islami at Hyderpora and asked the inmates not to come out of the houses, official sources said.

Those present at the residence of Hurriyat chairman at the time of police swoop included Ghulam Nabi Sumji, vice-president of Muslim Conference, its general secretary Shabir Dar, Abdul Rashid Antoo and Altaf Ahmad Masoodi, they said.
Geelani was detained, on Thursday, at Sangam in Anantnag and lodged at Bijbehara police station when he tried to proceed to Shangus where six militants were killed after remaining holed up for nearly 40 hours on Tuesday, sources said. Bureau Report
