Jammu, Sept 18: After bouncing back in the domestic tourism sector, Jammu and Kashmir government is now attempting to woo foreign visitors by highlighting the scenic splendour and the improved security situation in the state during two
international tourism conferences.
A 12-member delegation of tourism officials and tour operators led by Minister of State for Tourism Ghulam Ahmed Mir is heading for a three-day world tourism conference at
Kula Lumpur beginning on Sunday and an international tour and travel agents and industry conference at Singapore from October 6.
The state's breath-taking beauty and the facilities for tourists will also be highlighted as the delegation will seek to convince the international audience that security situation in the state was appropriate for visits by tourists, Mir said. The delegation will cite the inflow of about 2.5 lakh tourists to Kashmir this year, the highest figure since militancy erupted in the state in 1989, the minister told a news agency here before leaving on the foreign trip.
The recent inter-state council meeting in Srinagar, besides visits by President APJ Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, 300 MPs and some foreign delegations will contribute to convincing the international community to visit Kashmir Valley. "No tourist has been targeted," he said, adding "people of the state genuinely want peace and economic prosperity".
