Eighty-nine hostages walked free on Wednesday after Muslim gunmen ended a two-day revolt in Zamboanga, that left dozens of dead and wounded, officials said. A total of 89 people were found unharmed inside a residential compound on the outskirts of Zamboanga after more than 200 armed followers of renegade Muslim leader Nur Misuari walked away as part of a deal with the government, local official Erico Fabian said.
"It's over," Lieutenant General Roy Cimatu declared as the former captives, looking haggard and many of them barefoot, streamed out of the building. Fabian said that including 24 hostages who were freed overnight Tuesday, "there must have been a total of at least 113 hostages at the height of the crisis."
The deal ended a two-day siege that left 27 people dead and 15 others wounded after the gunmen ran amok. Bureau Report
