Dehra Dun, Nov 09: Uttaranchal government today approved OBC status for Gorkhas and two other castes even as the governor notified minority status for the Jain community, coinciding with the third anniversary of the formation of the hill state. The state cabinet approved OBC status for Gorkhas, Chahang and Uthalia Bora communities.
"We are pleased to announce OBC status to Gorkhas and two other castes as token gift on the third anniversary of the creation of Uttaranchal," said transport minister Hira Singh Bisht, who along with forest minister Nav Prabhat was in the cabinet sub-committee which went into the issue of demand of such a status to Gorkhas and others.
Under the new provision, the three castes would be entitled to 14 per cent reservation in state government jobs, Bisht told.
Meanwhile, Governor Sudershan Agarwal notified minority status to Jains, which had earlier been approved by the state cabinet.
