Islamabad, Sept 03: An American intelligence analyst, serving life term in US for passing on secrets to Israel, might have provided details of Pakistan's nuclear programme to Israel, a media report said here today. It can be assumed that most, if not all, of what the United States knew about Pakistan's nuclear programme has also been known to Israel since 1985, thanks to the spy Jonathan pollard, 'Daily Times' said in a report from Washington.
Information passed on to Israel by Pollard, who has served 18 years in prison for spying, included those on Pakistan's nuclear programme, it said adding, before arrest, Pollard had offered to sell information to Pakistan along with some other countries but Islamabad declined the offer.
Pollard, a civilian intelligence analyst for the US navy, was arrested by FBI agents in November 1985 after the Israeli Embassy in Washington declined his attempt to seek asylum. He was accused of passing thousands of top-secret documents to Israeli agents in 1984 and 1985.
He cooperated and pleaded guilty to one count of espionage and was sentenced in March 1987.
Israel initially contended that Pollard was a rogue spy but later admitted that he was an Israeli agent. Bureau Report
