Pakistan government is considering registering a case of treason against former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto for her statements criticising the country`s policy on Kashmir during her recent visit to India. Apart from Bhutto, the government is also considering filing treason cases against pro-Taliban Islamic religious parties` leaders like chief of Jamat-e-Islami, Qazi Hussain Ahmad and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, for their support to the Taliban militia.
The government has expressed concern over Bhutto`s recent statements in India and the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi has also been asked to submit a report on her visit and meeting with Indian leaders, Urdu daily `Nawai Waqt` said. Reacting to the report, a spokesman for Bhutto`s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Farutullah Babar, dismissed it as a planted story.
He said it was a part of an orchestrated campaign by the government to whip up the public sentiments against the former Prime Minister.
Stating that it was ridiculous for the government to contemplate such an action, he told reporters that Benazir has not said anything new but her comments acquired prominence because she said them in India.
There is no question of going back on what has been said by her, he said.
