Jammu, Sept 21: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah today criticised the Opposition for branding National Conference as an organisation of "Muslims and Pakistanis" and said that spreading such canards indicated their frustration.

"We have been branded as an organisation of Muslims and Pakistanis by the so-called well-wishers forgetting that several National Conference workers and leaders fell to the bullets of militants," he said addressing an election rally at Sidhra, about eight km from here. "Had it been so, then why NC workers alone are being targeted and killed? they (militants) have fixed a cash reward of Rs 50 lakh to eliminate me, yet our party has not done anything to sever the links with country," he said, adding that "the fate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir is interwined with India." Referring to BJP, Abdullah said that the party could have praised the efforts of NC government for putting the state back on rails during last six years.

"Both BJP and Congress do not accept how much our government contributed to the development of the state despite militancy and booming of terrorist guns since the party assumed power in 1996," he said, adding that they could see that schools which were closed down due to militancy were reopened and several schemes ensuring employment for rural youth were implemented.
