New Delhi, May 05: It's literally gold, gold everywhere...! As individual jewellery showrooms fail to satiate the hunger of gold crazy Indians, come gold souks or jewellery malls, where hundreds of jewellers showcase their collection, all under one roof.
The souks know no boundaries and everything from Kundan and Meenakari to Filigree, Ras-Rava, Jadao and even studded jewellery from Bangkok, chains from Italy and 24 ct gold from China, would be showcased at one place to fulfill the jewellery needs of Indian consumer.
After becoming a big hit in Dubai and other international shopping destinations, gold souks are the latest craze to hit the Indian jewellery sector and around a dozen are already coming up all over the country, those in the industry say.
"Quality, ambience, convenience and variety are going to be the USP of these souks and some of them even plan to have hallmarking facilities as quality and value for money are very important considerations," says G S Pillai, former regional director, World Gold Council.
"Souk basically means a gold bazar and Chandni Chowk in old Delhi, Zaveri Bazar and Bank Street can be called souks, but here hundreds of jewellers are scattered all over the market. However, in Dubai souks consist of one building where all the jewellers are housed," explains Pillai, also the president of Aerens Goldsouk International Ltd.
