Imphal, Apr 27: Two powerful bombs allegedly planted by insurgents were today unearthed at Kumbi area in Bishenpur district, where heavy exchange of fire between ultras and security personnel was reported during polling for inner Manipur constituency in the second and last phase yesterday, official sources said. Experts have rushed to the spot, about 5 kms south of here, to defuse the bombs and security personnel cordoned off the area, the sources said.
A heavy exchange of fire had taken place yesterday at Kumbi after the attack on a polling station but no casualty was reported.
There was no report of any untoward incident in any part of the state, which remained calm and security personnel deployed at various interior places for the elections were withdrawn. Most of the polling personnel have reported to district headquarters after their duty.
Manipur had witnessed violence during polling yesterday in which 1 CRPF jawan was killed, four persons injured and two ministers escaped a militant attack.
The elections were held in the backdrop of a vote boycott call and 17-hour bandh by separatist United National Liberation Front (UNLF).
Elections to the outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat held on April 20 in the first phase were also marred by large-scale violence in the face of a similar vote boycott call by the UNLF.
Three Assam rifles personnel and one BSF jawan on poll duty were killed in the first phase besides damage caused to EVMs and election material.
